What is Botox®?

BOTOX® is one of the most popular injectable anti-aging treatments available. It’s made with botulinumtoxin type A, which can block neurotransmitters in the muscles and prevent movement. This comes with a couple benefits – it can prevent the formation of dynamic wrinkles (or wrinkles caused by movement and facial expressions) and it can also relax tense or furrowed muscles to smooth them out and lessen the appearance of creases or folds.

BOTOX® has been in use for decades as both a cosmetic and medical treatment. It comes with a very high safety profile, especially in the hands of a board-certified dermatologist. With BOTOX®, you can feel more confident in your skin without the need for surgery or downtime.

What Can Botox® Treat?

  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead lines
  • Glabellar lines (11’s)
  • Brow lift
  • Gummy smile
  • Lip flip

Your dermatologist can help you determine the right treatment approach for you with BOTOX®. It’s important to understand what it can and can’t do so you achieve the results you’re hoping for. BOTOX® is easily combined with other skincare treatments like chemical peels, or microneedling, as well as other injectable treatments like fillers. Our team can create a customized treatment plan for you during your consultation.

What Happens During Treatment?

BOTOX® can be administered in a quick, 15-minute appointment. Most patients don’t require numbing cream, but your injector can supply one if needed. Once you’re ready and the area is cleansed, the product is carefully injected into the facial muscles where you want treatment. If you’re considering other cosmetic treatments, they can be performed at the same time.

Botox® Recovery and Results

There’s no downtime after Botox®, but it’s important to follow some steps afterward to achieve best results. For the first 30 minutes after treatment, you’ll need to exercise the treated muscles to help the product take hold faster. For the first four hours after treatment, you’ll need to avoid laying down or bending over, since this can cause unwanted blood flow to the area and cause the product to spread. Similarly, don’t massage or rub the treated area for the first 24 hours (take care when washing your face or applying makeup). Also, for the first 24 hours, avoid exercise, sweating, and hot, steamy environments. Make sure to wear SPF 30+ to protect your treated skin against sun damage.

Botox® can take up to two weeks before producing your final results, after which you can return for a touch-up if needed. It can last for three to four months before you can return for your next injection session.

Can Botox age you?

Botox will not age your appearance after it wears off. Botox smooths fine lines and facial wrinkles; some people receive Botox as a preventative treatment for wrinkles.

Can Botox help sinuses?

Studies have shown that people with seasonal allergies may benefit from Botox injections. Botox is used to treat migraines that might accompany your sinus infection and may be able to reduce other symptoms like itching, sneezing, and drainage.

Can Botox lift eyebrows?

When Botox is injected under the eyebrows, the muscles relax and the skin on your forehead is smoothed. This results in a subtle lifting effect.

Can I have wine after Botox?

Since alcohol has blood thinning properties that could worsen injection site bruising, you should wait a day or two to drink after Botox injections.

Does Botox affect the brain?

Although Botox blocks nerve signals to the treated muscles, there is no evidence that it directly impacts the brain.

Does Botox make you look older after it wears off?

Botox will not make you look older. After the injections wear off, your skin will resume normal aging and wrinkles could return naturally.

Does Botox make you shiny?

Too much Botox will make the skin extremely smooth, allowing light to bounce off it and create a shiny effect. It is important to receive Botox injections from an experienced provider who knows how to inject the right amount of Botox to prevent this look.

How long does Botox last?

On average, Botox lasts 3-4 months.

Is 50 too old for Botox?

Botox candidacy depends more on the health of your skin rather than your age. Patients aged 50 or older with mild to moderate skin laxity can still benefit from Botox.

Is Botox a poison?

Botox is technically made from a poisonous substance called botulinum toxin but it is not poisonous to the body when injected in small amounts for cosmetic purposes.

Is Botox good for under eye wrinkles?

Yes! Botox can smooth fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes for a brighter, refreshed appearance.

What should you not do after Botox?

After Botox, avoid rubbing your face or putting pressure on the treatment areas. Wash your face carefully and avoid putting products or makeup on the injection sites. You should also avoid alcohol and sun exposure since this could worsen bruising and swelling.

Why can't you lay down after Botox?

Avoid laying down after Botox since this could cause the product to spread or worsen bruising.

Should I move my face after Botox?

It’s often a good idea to move your face with mild facial movements but make sure not to rub the treatment area or undergo strenuous activity for a few days.

What age should I start Botox?

Patients can start receiving Botox as young as 18 and it is often recommended as a preventive wrinkle treatment for patients in their late 20s-early 30s.

What are the bad side effects of Botox?

Botox will often cause mild bruising, swelling, redness, and tenderness around the injection site. Less common side effects are dry eyes, a crooked smile, and drooping eyelids.

What do I need to know before getting Botox?

It’s important to know that Botox is a temporary solution for fine lines and wrinkles but it cannot be used for severe skin laxity or deep wrinkles. You should also be prepared to avoid strenuous activity, certain medications, and drinking alcohol for a few days before and after treatment. Many people receive Botox so it is not just for celebrities.

What is Botox used for?

Botox is used for a wide variety of cosmetic procedures, the most popular being for wrinkle reduction. Botox can also treat a gummy smile, excessive sweating, migraines, and TMJ disorder.
