How to Create a Men’s Skincare Routine

If you’ve heard more and more about men’s skincare and don’t know where to start, you’re not alone. For many years, men didn’t give much thought to skincare but a more recent focus on skincare for everyone is changing that. It’s actually easier than you might think to put together a simple, effective skincare routine to keep your skin in good shape and looking good for many years to come. Here’s what to know about men’s skincare and how our board-certified dermatologist can help.

What’s Included in a Men’s Skincare Routine?

Although everyone’s skincare routine will be unique, at its most basic a skincare routine should include:

  • Cleanser (face wash)
  • Moisturizer (lotion)
  • Sunscreen

If you’re looking for a more targeted or advanced regimen, you might include things like toner, serums, or topical treatments, but it’s best to stick to the basics when just starting out. You shouldn’t throw too many new skincare products at your skin at once, since it can be difficult to determine which products are working and which ones aren’t.

Determining Your Skin Type

One important factor in putting together a skincare regimen is knowing your skin type. This can help determine what products or ingredients will work best in your routine and which ones you should avoid. There are generally five different types of skin:

  • Oily
  • Dry
  • Normal
  • Combination
  • Sensitive

Determining your skin type requires paying more attention to your skin and how it behaves. For example, oily skin typically becomes shiny throughout the day, especially in areas like the forehead, nose, and chin. Dry skin often becomes rough or flaky when it’s not moisturized regularly. Sensitive skin may easily become red or broken out, or feel like it’s burning or stinging when you scratch it or apply certain products. Finally, combination and regular skin are just that – combination skin is a cross between oily and dry and regular skin is, well, regular skin.

Tips for Putting Together a Men’s Skincare Routine

One of the most effective ways to put together the right skincare routine for your specific goals is by consulting a board-certified dermatologist who can recommend the right skincare products. That being said, here are some of our best tips for men’s skincare:

  • Wash your face at least once daily with a dedicated facial cleanser (not bar soap)
  • Pick your moisturizer based on your skin type – for example, dry skin likes richer moisturizers while lighter moisturizers are best for oily skin
  • Don’t forget to moisturize around your eyes or even add an eye treatment
  • Wear sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily – if you spend time outside, don’t forget a hat, shades, and lip SPF
  • Support your regimen by drinking water, eating clean, and getting enough sleep
